(www.ARPACanada.ca, August 4, 2010): A newly-released Angus Reid public opinion poll reveals some startling findings on abortion that blow apart the myth that the abortion debate is settled in Canada. In its ten page news release, Angus Reid highlighted that only 21% of Canadians know that there are no legal restrictions on abortion in Canada. Even more astounding, when the respondents were told about the reality of the lack of abortion laws and then asked which option they would prefer to regulate abortion, only 27% wanted the status-quo to be maintained. Less than half of the respondents (44%) think that abortions should be publicly funded and a majority think that women under the age of 18 should have to get consent from their parents or legal guardian to get an abortion. To add to all of this, a whopping 79% "would support provincial legislation demanding that health care workers give information about alternatives to abortion to pregnant women."

In spite of Parliament's resounding defeat of Bill C-384 which proposed to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide, the Quebec government has established a special committee to examine "dying with dignity". In response to their request for submissions, ARPA Canada hs prepared a 12 page submission about the concept of dignity in Canadian law and society, including a Christian perspective. Craine TORONTO, Ontario, June 21, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Ontario’s highest court has confirmed that obstetricians are charged with caring for the unborn child as well as his or her mother.  In a Thursday ruling the Ontario Court of Appeal upheld the judgment of the Ontario Superior Court in a preliminary hearing to a malpractice suit filed against Guelph General Hospital by the Liebig family.

In an unanimous decision, the five-judge panel denied the appeal based on the “very long and well-established” legal precedent that an infant “may sue for damages sustained as a result of the negligence of health care providers during labour and delivery.”

So surely we need the facts about an issue as ethically fraught as abortion. Yet not only do we not have them, but they are intentionally not gathered or, if some are or might be available, access to them is denied. That allows two myths that favour the pro-choice stance on abortion to be propagated: That late-term abortion is rare and that there is a consensus in Canada on the public-policy regime that should govern abortion (which, at present, is the complete absence of any law).
