July 22, 2010

Is the Media Out to Get Us? Yes! In this 15 minute audio e-Luminary, Jon Dykstra, editor of Reformed Perspective magazine addresses the topic of media bias and how we can respond. Dykstra delivered this talk at an ARPA event in Winnipeg earlier this year. We encourage you set 15 minutes aside today to listen to this and consider how we can apply it in our homes. Which media will you fire, put on probation, or hire? Deciding what is suitable for our homes will make a big difference in cultivating our worldview.

Racism alleged (Version 1)

by Fred McMahon

Allegations of racism are being leveled against Jim Brooner, the credit manager at the NorthWest Company store in Fort Liard. A human rights complaint was filed Tuesday by Chris Hamson, claiming that Brooner grants almost every Native a store credit card but refuses more than half the whites who apply.

“I got refused about a month ago,” Hamson told the Gazette, “and then I found out a couple of my buddies at the mine were refused too. Then we started asking around and it turned out that while all the Native guys had one, only a few of the white guys at the site had gotten a card. This is reverse racism – this Brooner guy is racist.”

Hamson’s friend, Paul Kempler says Brooner should be fired, “This may not seem important, but really these credit cards are vital. I mean, it’s not like there are a lot of ATM’s up here to go take out cash. We need credit to buy anything. So something has to be done quick.”

Fort Liard store manager Ernie Highton has promised to look into the allegations.

Racism alleged (Version 2)

by Fred McMahon

Allegations of racism are being leveled against Jim Brooner, the credit manager at the NorthWest Company store in Fort Liard. A lawyer for the Entartee Band says Brooner regularly grants much higher credit limits to whites who apply for a store credit card than Natives applying for the same card.

“Some of the band members complained to the chief about this a few months back,” said band lawyer Joe Windtalker, “so he asked me to look into it. I’ve been asking around and it’s true. This guy starts us at a $500 credit limit, but every white guy who gets a card starts with at least a $2,500 limit. Brooner is a racist.”

The band chief, Charlie Tucker, wants Brooner fired, “This may not seem that important, but really these credit cards are vital. I mean, it’s not like there are a lot of ATM’s up here to go take out cash. We need credit to buy anything. So something has to be done quick.”

Fort Liard store manager Ernie Highton has promised to look into the allegations.
