Bill C-270 / S-263: Stopping Internet Sexual Exploitation

Status: C-270 at second reading in the House of Commons | S-263 passed first reading in the Senate

Short title: Stopping Internet Sexual Exploitation (SISE Act)

Description: Prohibits making, distributing or advertising pornography without first ascertaining that the person depicted is over 18 years of age and gave their consent to their image being depicted.

Analysis: A significant amount of online pornography exploits young people, particularly girls, under the age of 18. Organizations such as Porn Hub have recently been in hot water for profiting from this non-consensual pornography, but further steps need to be taken to protect young girls from online sexual exploitation. This bill would make such exploitation a criminal offence, punishable by a fine of up to $500,000 or up to two years in prison.
