Cabinet Minister calls for end to sex-selection feticide

A A

December 30, 2011

Somewhate hidden in a statement concerning girls’ rights, and yet so clearly stated, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister for Status of Women, has called for an examination of the practice of sex-selection feticide. Published in the Edmonton Journal, the Minister states that “sexselection feticide denies millions of girls the right to be born merely because they are girls.” How true and how terrible!

The practice happens right here in Canada too. See this discussion paper by the EFC on gendercide in Canada for more on that. We applaud Ms. Ambrose for not shying away from this politically sensitive issue. It must be dealt with. Girls should not be killed before they are born simply because they are girls (nor should boys for that matter).

Please email Ms. Ambrose to thank her for calling for protection of girls. Also take the time to respectfully request that she end the barbaric practice of sex-selection feticide in Canada too. To see a sample letter, click read more…

To: The Honourable Rona Ambrose, P.C., M.P.
Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women

Dear Minister,

Thank you very much for your call to protect girls’ rights. Your article in the Edmonton Journal is a strong and necessary call for greater protection of girls. Thank you especially for including a most fundamental aspect of girls’ rights. You identified that “sex-selection feticide denies millions of girls the right to be born merely because they are girls.” How true and how terrible!

Perhaps we can go farther than an international day to focus on girls’ issues though. Perhaps our government can consider introducing a bill to protect girls before they are born by putting an end to sex-selection feticide in this country. Ms. Ambrose, I think the Canadian people, if aware of the practice of sex-selection feticide in Canada, would be horrified and would call for an end to the practice. Please consider ending it here in Canada in 2012.

May you be equipped with much courage, guidance, wisdom and strength in your service. Thank you for your service to Canada.

Sincerely yours,
