Minister Clement Opens the Government’s Books for All to See
OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – Aug. 31, 2011) – Today, the Honourable Tony Clement, President of the Treasury Board and Minister responsible for FedNor, launched a website for Canadians to access the Government’s quarterly financial reports. This represents an important move forward in the Open Government initiative as, for the first time, departments, agencies and Crown corporations are producing quarterly financial reports and making them public.
“In 2009, the Government introduced legislation making quarterly financial reporting mandatory,” said Minister Clement. “Today, we are making those reports available to the public so they can see more detail on how Canadian tax dollars are being spent.”
Quarterly financial reports complement other financial information currently provided by the Government, such as the Public Accounts of Canada, departmental performance reports and Crown corporation annual reports.
“This is another example of our government’s commitment to improving accountability and increasing transparency,” added Minister Clement. “Just as families can access bank statements on their household finances, now taxpayers can get regular financial updates from their government.”
