04 Apr 2017 Informing parents about their own kids “extreme” says Alberta education minister

Jason Kenney, leader of the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta It's only been a few weeks since Jason Kenney was elected as leader of the Alberta PC Party and already the debate over parental rights in that province has heated up. Kenney had a meeting with the Post Media editorial board last week, in which he made the case that the government's current policy on so-called "Gay Straight Alliances" (GSA clubs) might need to be revisited. Specifically, Kenney objected to the notion that schools are not supposed to communicate with parents...

04 Apr 2017 The real genetic discrimination no one is talking about

ARPA's Director of Law and Policy, André Schutten Something unusual happened in Parliament last month. More than 100 Liberal MPs defied their leader, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and voted in favour of a bill that had originated in the Senate. Bill S-201 would disallow what's called "genetic profiling". ARPA's Director of Law and Policy, André Schutten, says the goal is to make sure that genetic testing can’t be required in applications for employment or life insurance policies. He says under this law, “a life insurance policy, or a health policy, or...

28 Mar 2017 Alberta Baptist schools forced to affirm new sexual orthodoxy

Lawyer John Carpay for the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms Alberta Education Minister David Eggen has issued what amounts to an ultimatum to two small Baptist schools near Edmonton on the issue of so-called Gay-Straight Alliance Clubs (GSAs). Alberta legislation requires schools to allow the institution of those clubs if even one student asks for them. The principal of the Baptist schools has openly said he will not comply with that. Now, Minister Eggen has published a Ministerial Order which tells the schools they must comply. The Order came after Eggen released...

Theresa Ng The Alberta government is in hot water for posting links to pornography from a government-sponsored website. The issue was uncovered by blogger Theresa Ng, who runs a site called "Informed Albertans”. Last Monday, Ng was surfing the Alberta government’s Gay-Straight Alliance Network website, a site she says is “funded and recommended” by the Alberta government. The site is organized by the “Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services (iSMSS)” from the University of Alberta. Ng was shocked at what she discovered. “There’s a section called ‘community supports’ intended to...

14 Mar 2017 More pushback on Bill 10

Donna Trimble There’s more reaction this week to the latest developments on Bill 10 in Alberta. That's the law that mandates the creation of so-called gay-straight alliance clubs in all schools in the province if children ask for them. A few weeks ago, Education Minister David Eggen conceded that the issue was “legally complicated.” The comment came in connection with a report he received on what to do about two small Baptist schools near Edmonton, who have announced they will be openly defying that new law. Donna Trimble with Parents for Choice in...

07 Mar 2017 Retreat in Alberta?

Alberta Education Minister, David Eggen There was a new development in the Alberta Education sector last week. Education Minister David Eggen appears to be backing away from plans to insist that all schools - including independent and Christian schools - will have to live by Bill 10 and the province’s policies on transgenderism in the classroom. He told the National Post  that an inquiry into two Edmonton area schools which are refusing to follow the policy has unearthed unexpected legal implications and the situation is “more complicated” than they had originally foreseen. ARPA Education...

07 Mar 2017 TWU Headed to Supreme Court

The Trinity Western Law School case is headed to the Supreme Court of Canada. Late last month, the Court granted leave to appeal two cases; a BC Court of Appeal ruling which came down in favour of the school, and an Ontario ruling that went the opposite way. There’s already a precedent of sorts on this. The Supreme Court ruled 16 years ago that that the BC Teacher’s College would have to accredit graduates from Trinity’s education program as teachers in that province. ARPA lawyer John Sikkema says it’s not surprising that the Supreme...
