Alberta Government Refuses to Challenge Human Rights Commission

By Jason Fekete, Calgary Herald April 29, 2009The Alberta government introduced amendments Tuesday to the province’s human rights code that will enshrine sexual orientation as a grounds of prohibited discrimination and allow parents to remove their children from teachings that conflict with their religious beliefs or sexuality.

But the government balked at proposed changes that would strip the Alberta Hu-man Rights Commission of its power to adjudicate cases of free speech–one of the most contentious sections in the code and an area that various groups wanted reformed.[Keep reading this article here.]
